Back from flying!

hi all,

i m back from my post exams travels in barcelona and london. It was really tiring, but definitely worth it! i think i have never took planes so many times as i did last week. Haha..budget airlines really revoluntionise air travel. I nv dreamt of travelling around europe at this age of 22! Yupz, i muz really thank god for being so lucky.

havent got time and mood to sit down and slowly blog about my travels, which i must do soon before i forget and lose the feeling. Haha. Right now, i have just packed most of my stuff into my luggage. Or rather, stuff everything into bags so that the housemaster can check the room. And i had a great evening with my neighbours trying to estimate the weight of my luggage. Some say abt 10kg, some say more. We have tried many means to correctly estimate the weight and our tools were cartons of glass bottles and a mini 2kg weighting scale. Obviously it wasnt accurate until we decided to use the bodybuilding machine outside Jose room. So we brought our luggage 2 storeys down and use the metal rod as the balance scale! haha. Andreas even brought the ruler to measure the midpoint of the rod. Really nice. And tadaaa..my bag is about 17kg.

And the really sad thing is that our baggage allowance is only 20kg. I think i have about 35 kg in total. And only 5kg is allowed in cabin. So where shall the 10kg go? hahah...i m gg to perform some magic!

shall go off to bed and continue another day.

My neglected bloggie

Oh no, i think i keep neglecting my bloggie. And complaining when pple dun update theirs too often. So i gotta make it a habit to write more often.

END OF WC2006!
This is like really fast. When i first came to stuttgart, the countdown clock was like many many days to World Cup, then when i next came, it just seems to get slower. And in a bliz, it is all gone. WC always update my soccer knowledge from 0 to a bit more than zero. Haha. Before that, i have totally no idea who are the players in the German team. But after a few matches, the names become familiar. Haha..if only i can remember the names of the new people i met this well. But that's cos the players are wearing jerseys with their names. Haha.

So Italy won. But i think the french are quite lucky to have come this far too. Bias or not bias, it's over. And the result matters the most, not the players' skills or their method of winning, so long they win. Cos that's what everyone remembers them for. Being the winner.

Oh yes, it marks the end of the pipipopo of car horns in the streets. And the sea of flags, painted faces, enthusiasm, hope, tears. It is interesting to watch how people react to soccer. Haha. Such intense reactions on a mass scale will prob nv happen in Singapore.

SOMMERtime
Summer is getting so hot one week and rainy another week. but it is still generally hot and the buses are totally like incubators. But summer has great things to look out for too.
Summer has great sunsets. At ard 9pm, the sky is cast in shades of pink, orange and purple. And is slowly gets darker and darker. Longer days means we can stay out later but then again all the shops are closed too early.

End of summer brings summer sales too. And it is especially good because of the World Cup, the shops are opened a little later than usual. But not enough! Hopefully, there will be more time to do shopping before i go back.

Summer brings loads of fruits too like strawberries and cherries, which i m alternating between them cos get sianz of them when there is too much. They look so much nicer and fresher than in Singapore and best part is of course it is cheaper! As well as many interesting fruits which i wanna try to! Ritter Sport has summer series too. Of yoghurt flavoured chocolate with fruits. They taste greater than chocolate cos they dun hv the chocolatey sticky, and sinnful feelings. Haha.but i doubt it is any less fattening than the normal ones.

END oF EXAMS
It is not the end of exams yet, but i feel like a kite on a really really thin string. Like my freedom is almost there where i can taste it. hv been slacking around or zzing. Left with the last paper and the whole exam period is too draggy. From the 20th June till now. I guess, the momentum of studying is also lost, or hasnt really been there, or will be there when nearer the date of exam where i ll go oh sheet oh sheet, then start picking up my books.

Massive Updates!

My blog seems neglected for the whole of june. Sadly. Becos it is cmg to the end of June! So here goes a nice summary of June.

1st June to 11 June - Munster and Netherlands

I was really lucky to be able to spend a week with Yvonne's host family from her german immersion program 2 yrs ago. We went to IJsselmeer with the family in a Caravan. It was a really great experience and i really like the outdoory feeling. We have meals outside our caravan, together with other frens and it was a cosy feeling. The style was simple but the food was always marvellous. And dinner always goes great wif esspresso in a really cute and small cup or with a little Ouzo, a strong greek Liqueur that makes the throat tingly and nice.

The weather was really cold and i must always wear jeans and thick layers of jacket. Though the sun was really bright, the wind takes away all the heat and it was really impossible for beach activities. At least for mi. But the others went surfing as well, though the wind was not really gd. And surfing is like a sport for all ages. The young and old. Everybody surfs.

Back to Muenster was fun too. It was the strawberry season and Chun Wei being a huge strawberry fan, had all of us influenced. We bought alot of fresh and perfectly shaped ones at the market place. I think i have never eaten so many strawberries for consecutive days. We went to the strawberry farm to to pluck strawberries and secretly eat before weighing.Hee. We also ate white asparagus which taste super yummy with hollandaise sauce. It is said that today, 28th July is the last day of the asparagus season. I m so going to miss such fresh asparagus.

12 Juni to 18 Juni - Back to Student life

When i first came back to Esslingen after being away for only 10 days, i have problems adjusting back. Things seems foreign but after a while everything seemed on track.

Football match viewing in Stuttgart

Nope i didnt go to the stadium but was at the Schlossplatz in Stuttgart where there is an open arena with a few big Screen. There were so many people that we had to squeeze our way through the taller people to the front. I think some people were rather unhappy cos we obstructed them or so but we didnt really care. oops. It was the Germany and Poland match and the goal was like at the 92 min or smthg. It was so much anticipated that the people jumped around like mad and i got drowned in the crowd. haha.someone jus landed on my foot with full force from jumping! But the atmosphere was so happie and crazy that nothing matter anymore. And after that i believe the streets in the whole of germany is in constant traffic jam and the people took the celebration to the streets. People sit around at the boot of the car it was a sea of red, black and yellow. The people sounded their horns for almost like 3 hours non stop till 1am i think. Many students from the hostels went downstairs and joined in the fun. They started shaking the cars and even the Buses too! And i think the bus driver was quite pissed. Haha. Cannot go home early from work because of jam and have to tahan a group of mad students making his bus shaky. An old car cannot take the traffic jam and the engine started giving out smoke.

Friday 16 June - Excursion in Bodensee, Lake Constance

Lake Constance is Europe's 2nd largest lake and is bordered by Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We went to the Zeppelin Museum and i think i m really quite lucky cos the Museums that we visited jus gets better. I think i like science Museum better than those artsy kind. We were taken back to the Era of airship travel and there was an actual piece of the Airship being displayed. It was so huge that it served as a ceiling and it was only a tiny weeny part of the whole ship. We could also walk into the ship and it was pretty much like a cruise ship. It looks pretty modern despite being built in the 1940s.

Saturday 17 June, Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe is a really modern city, with street trams and all running thro the streets and it sort of reminded mi of Croatia. There were many asians too, probably because it is near the University too. We were in ZKM, a centre for Art and Media. It was pretty much like science centre but had a specific Theme - Light. We saw so much different kinds of light and lasers till we all went dizzy wizzy. But it was really fun playing with light in the dark room.

19 Jun till now.

The weather now is changing to summer, alternating between weeks of showers and thunderstorms and super hot afternoons. The sun wakes up earlier too around 5 plus 6. And the longest daylight day was 21st Jun.

It is the end of lectures and soon the end of the semester. I have 3 more exams to go. 4 is already over though and it seems like everything is going to pass in a whizz. i keep having mixed feelings, wanting to go back home smtimes and yet wanting to stay here longer.

Upcoming plans

Stuff i wanna do before i go back to Singapore

liking it more and more everyday

Today was a rocky start after waking up at 720! Macham 15 mins before lecture!  wat happened to mi. i m immuned to my alarm clock. Was late for lecture naturally, and was terribly lost in lab. Once more, i have came unprepared for lab.

And i had a presentation for my german culture lesson, and of all topic, i have chosen the German kitchen. Why everything i do is about food. Haha. I m such a food fan. But it was really fun, interviewing people and stuff. The cool part is after the end of our presentation we had a slide dedicated to Emeline, cos tmr is her bdae! then we had a little bdae celebration at Dick. I have been here for 3 months and this is the 1st time i have been to dick, supposedly the most happening place in the whole of Esslingen. But it is pretty much just a shopping mall and pub place. but we have got a nice corner at d-bar.

"What is the name of the bar we are going?"

"d-bar"

"Yah, i know, which bar?

"d-bar!"

Haha..it sounds a little duh, like That CD shop and This fashion.

But it is really nice chatting with frens and all but when people talk about when are we going back or about after exams it gets a little sad. It is like all happening too soon, just when i m beginning to understand the lectures a bit more. (or maybe getting used to not understanding) Next week is Spring holidays, and there is about prob 1 or 2 more weeks of lessons and that marks the end of formal lessons!

Why does time always flies when i m enjoying. Sure i look forward to going back and doing stuff with frens and family back home, but i ll never know when am i going to come back here again. And i have singapore for all my whole life.

Well sad or not, time still flies mercilessly. So, looking on the brighter side, i have got the Muenster trip to look forward to. Yay! for a change, i m not just visiting a place and admiring the architecture and the appearance but also getting to know a German family.

So i will be away for the whole of next week from this Thursday onwards!

Long and Peaceful weekend

Did i promise darling that i gotta start studying? sheesh...how cum i m sinking back to relaxed mode. I cant seem to find the mood to study when the weather is gloomy and rainy. I know it is just excuses, but...(here goes another excuse)

On wednesday i carwashed at the clean park! haha. Whenever i tell people then i carwashed, they think that it is my part time job! haha. i wish! It is part of my project managment module and we did carwashing in a cleanpark. And the proceeds from the wash go to the Children's hospital. Think we got around 200+ that day. i m so proud of myself cos i can wash the car really clean. Partly becos the water hose is really strong and the wash program is really good. Firstly, we spray the car slowly with water to remove surface dirt. After that, we use the giant brush with foam oozing out from it to brush off all the muddy stuff. Thirdly, we wash away all that foamy mess. Following that, we spray the only metallic parts with hot water. After that, we spray coat the whole car with some magic waterproof coating that will cause all the surface water to fly away when the car later travel at 80 or 100km/h. See, pretty cool rite. Haha. But after washing my first car, my hand was shivering that i cant eat my sandwich properly! haha, but then after that quite slack cos many of the people would prefer to wash their cars themselves cos they know where is dirty and stuff. Haha. There was a Porsche which came in and everyone was like, ok, he's mine! haha..the car btw, not the guy inside. Our professor, Prof Ullrich was one of our 1st customer and he made a huge donation too! That's really nice. Hope he makes another good donation to my project management grade! ;)

This aftnn had lunch by Jose's kitchen. His Mexicanische Pasta taste really great. Mi and Yvon agreed that it tastes better than Pastamania cos normally somewhere halfway thro the cheesy creamy mixture i ll get sick of the tomato-ey feeling. But his is really yummilicious that i took a 2nd helping! haha. And i m getting fat soon. Jus ytd, i woke up and looked into the mirror, and OMG, my face is swollen! Ah....wat happened? Shit, i must control my diet. Please no more cheese!

And the story of mi and my pet insects never ends. 23 insects so far from what i can see from my table. Jus leaving my green tea on my table for 10 mins resulted in 2 kamikaze flies. To the flies: I cant drink my tea, u lose your life. What is ur point? And yesterday when the wind blew, my whole body and the blanket is showered by a swarm of dead flies! Someone pls offer help on how to get rid of insects. I did google searched on how to get rid of insects but the pictures of the insects almost made mi puke and i decided i will jus die looking at pics of insects before i even learn how to kill them. How?

And i m going to Muenster soon during the Spring holidays next week to stay with yvonne's host family and we are going by caravan to holland too! I m so so lucky.:o) thx, Yvonne! yay! After which i return it will be the middle of June and almost exams time. It is getting scary. Oh shheeeet..haha...

Terrific Tuesday!

Today i had many lessons but was quite a happie and relaxing day. Finally after more than 1 mth of boycotting canteen food, i decided to have my lunch there and be a normal FH student. I really have luck cos firstly, the soup today actually taste quite nice cos it wasnt salty. And the menu seems interesting with "Kalbsmaultaschen überbacken"  and from what i tried to translate was "Overbaked" Maultaschen(the pasta dumplings i was talking about in my previous post). I thought i will get smthg browny but later Tina explained that "overbaked" just means it was baked with smthg over it. In this case Cheese and Tomato. The 1st bite was nice cos it taste like Chinese food cos it is a bit "kiam" and soy-saucey feeling. But after a while it gets a bit overwhelming. If i had lunchbox i sure dabao back home to eat later. But then i tell myself cannot waste food so in the end i did finished it of course. To digest my overwhelming stomach i decided to take a walk in the city centre and i need to do some shopping as well. But i went shopping without a shopping bag and had to put all my barang barang in my jeans pocket!

Landeskunde(History and Culture) lesson was pretty interesting and enjoyable today cos for once, it is not abt Middle Ages and the Emperor but about WWI and events preceeding WWII. For once, it wasnt so difficult to understand Herr Starzmann. His lessons arent that hard after all, but maybe because he only speaks and speaks without any visual aids like handouts or ppt slides so it is smthg which i m not really used to and hence cannot really absorb.  And maybe because we didnt have much lesson time today cos we have 3 groups of presentations from our french classmates. And they had really interesting topics which are related to our lives here in Germany, like Education system, politics, the automobile industry, etc. Oh yes, i have to visit the New Benz Museum after seeing all the pictures of those Vintage cars! ahhh...

After lesson, we came back quite late and to our surprise, Tina had prepared Pfannkuchen (Swabian pancakes) for us! It is really thin and crispy and smells really nice! Feel so touched and happy! She had set the table with all the jams and spreads for us too. Furthermore, she waited for us though we actually came back quite late ard 8 plus. So i happily decorated my Pfannkuchen till it is almost the German Flag color but in the wrong order of colours. haha..

Tmr will be a fun day too cos i will out carwashing! It is my project management module and we are doing fundraising for a Childrens hospital. Sounds like a YEP project too yah. But the carwash was really an eyeopener cos we are doing it in a specially for carwashing centre and it seems kinda pro. So do look out for my nxt post about the carwash project!

Maultaschen Party!

Maultaschen, which is pasta square pockets filled with meat and spinach, like Ravioli, is a Swabian speciality, southwest Germany.

Today, we cooked Maultaschen, or rather Tina cooked and we are mostly assisstants or provided eye power. We made 3 kinds of Maultaschen: The 1st one as appetizer in soup, where the little pockets swim around the pot. The 2nd was fried with egg and onion and smells really lovely. Somewhat smells like Fuyong egg in the claypot stall in Science canteen. And the last with cheese and tomato puree and baked in oven which is my fav, cos it has loads of cheese: parmesan, edamer and it is like Lasagne!

It is swabish tradition to finish up all the food on the table and we wiped clean all the 3 dishes and digged around the whole kitchen cabinet to find board games to play. We found a numerical lock and breaking the code is a game too! Then we koped scrabble from the kitchen one floor below and it was really difficult to play in german cos my instinct is to group the letters to form English words. Then somewhat from scrabble we ended in shoewar, where all the girls' slippers were slipped off and hidden away! Then we all ganged up and removed Jose and Alex's shoes too and hid in all kinds of places, in the Freezer(with food inside), in the girls' toilet, in the lift.

It seems silly but we really had much fun with such simple pleasures. It feels great to play like nobody's business, like during primary school when i used to play catching all over the school, from the canteen, to the dentist's, then to the principal's office, for making too much noise. Haha.

Fun times like these, are times where i m going to miss most. Exactly one month more to exams, 2 months more before flying back. Sure i miss home and cant wait to get back to my family, but the uncertainty of when i m ever going to return back to germany and all the friendships forged here really made mi feel really unwilling to leave.

But that is like in 2 months. I shall treasure the remaining time i have here.

Italy trip

Last weekend was spent in Italy! The v.touisty place but by the Singaporean Mentality, u can nv go wrong with the longest queue of all char kway teow stalls.

12 May 2006

We set off to Bologna, the ulu place where nobody knows. But everyone knows Spaghetti Bolognese yah? Unfortunately i couldnt find that there either. Being kiasu we sat at the front of the waiting lounge jus before the gate and were one of the 1st few people to board the plane. The reward: Nice legroom just in front of the emergency exit. Teeny setback: Every single bottle and bag, including the small bag of sandwich i hid behind my back was discovered and had to be put in the cabin or someplace where it wont fly off easily.

Bologna airport is way different from a budget airport. It has international connections, many restaurants and it is just like stuttgart airport. We caught a train to Florence and had a pleasant surprise that our trains are jus as nice as the ICE trains. I dunno what class is that but it was fast and stable.

My favourite attraction is the Piazza del Duomo. The cathedral is so magnificent and huge that i wondered how people in the past built it. The construction lasted for more than 150 years and is one of the largest churches in the world! It was really a pity that we couldnt get to see the interior even though we tried to rush back the next day.

13 May 2006

Today i still cant believe that i m going to visit the ever so popular leaning tower of pisa which Italien scientists dropped balls of equal mass from?? I didnt get to find out if Galileo really conducted experiments there but the tower was really leaning and it felt weird climbing up a leaning tower. But the popularity of the tower really overshadowed all the other buildings surrounding it that i really thought that the tower was jus a tower in the middle of nowhere. But in actual fact, the bell tower is part of a group of buildings that symbolises the life of important Italiens in the past. From young the Christian is being baptised in the Batistry, then as he grows up, he prays in the cathedral. After his death, he is buried in the cemetary just beside the Baptistry. And the bell tower is to call the people for a mass.

But today, the place is a successful tourist attraction where English can be heard more often than Italien and there are lines of souvenoir shops along the streets. Something pretty interesting is that everyone is like taking photos of themselves superimposingly pushing the tower or some funny actions. If Pisa the tower is human, he probably will be laughing his toes off at all the silly things people do with his slanted body.

14 May 2006

Morning was spent strolling along the streets of Bologna where some marathon happened to be held there. There was pretty nothing much to do so we went to the airport early to have a really italien meal of Riscotti and Tortellini. The place was really fourt court style(v.rare to find) and we got a nice seat which a view of all the planes along the runway. The price was cheap too. What more can we ask for? Well, a rest for our tired feet!

Excursions week

This week is not officially excursion week but i have 2 excursions so far, on monday and tuesday.

Monday, 8 May 2006
In the morning, we went Bosch and had a little tour ard the factory. The introduction was pretty good, seeing all the first car engine and the evolution process. But after that we had a little tour around the factory, in which we really cannot see the connection between the process and the product.  for example how a particular screw or a particular test is connected to the whole picture of the car engine. It is pretty wasted i would say. But nevertheless we gotta visit Bosch and understand the different areas of products Bosch covers.

Tuesday, 9 May 2006

Today was the day of the most lessons and i happened to have a full day excursion to frankfurt. We set off in the morning at 7am in a really comfortable coach. And after breakfast of brown sunflower seed bread, which was a lil sour but nice to chew on, i fell asleep and woke up to frankfurt!

It was nice seeing skyscrapers again. It doesnt exactly feel like singapore but the feeling was great amongst all the tall and majestic buildings. We went to the  FWB® Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse (Frankfurt Stock Exchange), which was quite an insight learning about the bidding and asking process and how everything is so real time. I expected the whole marketplace to be well, like a market, but all was in order, jus people sitting down and looking at many many screens with 2 eyes.

Another place i enjoyed was the Communications Museum cos we get the see how the different medias evolved over the centuries. There were also hand ons games for Optical Telegraphy which was used in the past and actually transmits faster than snail mail over thousands of kilometers and the code is repeated from one telegraph station to the next.

Frankfurt in general is bustling with activities and varieties. We had lunch at some small stalls selling chinese take away food which was actually not bad. I had some fried pork slices with rice and took loads of chilli(and they were spicy!) which was really shiok. There were also more Asians and i actually heard a singlish sentence! "walk here la" or smthg to this meaning, which made yvonne and mi turn our heads immediately and there was this chinese family.

Wednesday, 10 May 2006
Today there isnt any excursion but i woke up late cos the sun didnt shine in strongly to wake mi up! Then i thought of maybe cooking some porridge cos yvonne was feeling good the night before and guess wat! it was burnt. Upset leh. esp so cos i brought all the stuff to kitchen to study to watch the fire and it was burnt???Yah now it still remains a mystery y did it burnt. Then mi n yvonne had to go grocery shopping then with her help, the next porridge was successful. Haha..how? how can i learn to cook better? Help.

Anyway, was feeling pretty bored choosing my fyp in the aftnn cos there were so many choices. Choosing 8 out of 470 fyps is like making me v.sleepy. haha...but spoke to merina over skype and it felt so nice! ever since i came here, it seemed like i totally lost touch with what is happening around my friends and msn is jus like superficial, you speak but not actually listen with all the distractions around.

Oh another great thing to rejoice is my first mail from singapore! and the honour goes to mitch! so nice and i m really touched! thx mich for the choco lip balm and i love chocolates! yay

Fruehlingsfest and new experience each time!

Today was a great day and mood was super super happie despite being tired at the end of the day.

I woke up late and had ample sleep. When i stepped into the kitchen, i could smell herbal chicken soup! ah ha...muz be yvonne! she has woke up early to cook the wat she calls  "Vit C" soup which is v.yummlicious. it is smhthg i get to enjoy once a mth! Thx yvon for the long long preparation in the kitchen the whole morning cos i didnt help much. And Chun Wei came to join us for lunch and we went to Fruehlingsfest tog after that.

Fruehlingsfest in the daytime was really different. Going there with different pple is a different experience. The last few time we went there most of the time was spent in a bier tent and this time was a more peaceful and fresh change.

I felt like a kid again playing little games in pasar malam stalls. And there is nv a game one is too old for. We sat on the ferris wheel and it had a hidden surprise cos our cabin can spin! So exciting...and poor yvonne was scared to bits but still brave enough to take many photos! The scenery was great seeing Bad Cannstatt being surrounded by hills and greenery. We sat on water slides too and was wet but fun, esp with yvonne around! hee...there were many other rides too, but just looking at them makes mi uncomfortable.

Another thing i like abt the fest is that we can eat food that we normally cant find in the streets, like a whole fish! it has been such a long time we ate fish with bones. The side bones were so chewy that i chewed them off. And Chun Wei cleared the whole head too. Apparently he is also another chewy person who chews the bone cartilage and marrow! But till now i have yet to find my fellow speices who eat chicken neck whole.

Today is Esslingen Music Night too where many bars in Esslingen have live music and there is shuttle bus to shuttle people from bar to bar the whole night. But we were pretty tired and didnt really have the stamina to last the whole night so we decided to call it a day.

But tmr is going to be a cool day cos we are going shopping in Metzingen. It is like the 1st time shops are actually opened on sundays. Wat a miracle and how can we miss it! It's great that finally we have smthg to do on sundays instead of staying at home the whole day.

Weekend in Holland!

Last weekend i was in holland and i really enjoyed every bit of it.

Friday, 28 Apr 2006
It didnt started off went cos on Friday night i was locked in my room. No matter how hard i turn the key in the lock it jus wouldnt bulge. Initially i thought it was someone was playing a silly prank but after awhile it seemed unlikely. So i seeked Yvonne's help thro msn.Luckily she wasnt asleep else i think i would hv cried. Then i had to throw the key out through my window to the 1st storey so that others can try opening from outside. Silly thoughts ran through my head like why must this happen just the night before i wanna go holland? It is like about 6 hours before departure. what if i m trapped the whole night? Then i cant go? muz i wait till tuesday before a locksmith is available? wat if i wanna pee? or shit? forunately, Matthias managed to turned the key after what seems like really long to mi cos i was so kan cheong. And he was saying the key was on the verge of breaking. Sheesh, i cant imagine if that happens. All is over and i went to lalaland.

Saturday, 29 Apr 2006 - Kinderdijk - Rotterdam
We left for holland slightly before 6 but it was already quite bright. It was the beginning of a 6 hr journey to Holland with an old but tough audi. Yvonne's classmate, Zhao Wei has invited us for this short trip with another of her friend, Jianping and her partner, Markus, a german. Along the journey we listened to chinese songs and i felt pretty much at home.

We reached holland around 11 plus and it is really interesting because there is really no physical borders or customs. It is jus as we travel along the expressway and suddenly, oh we are in holland. Our first stop was Kinderdijk, a windmill village with 19 mills dating all the way back from 1740s. One of them is opened to visitors and we could see how the people in those days lived and how the rotating shafts of the mills pump the water to reservoirs to control flooding because the whole place is below sealevel.

After that we travelled to Rottedam and checked into NH hotel. I was pretty excited cos we are like staying in a hotel! It has been so long since i last stayed in a Hotel. I am like wow-ing and taking in the surroundings like a mountain turtle. Haha.Though the experience was good, i would have preferred to stay in Youth Hostels cos they are much cheaper and somehow more casual and more fun.

Maybe because there were some celebration (it was the Queen's Birthday), the streets was especially messy and full of litter. There is Chinatown in the city centre, but not much Chinese around. That is really ironic. There are more Chinese Restaurants and shops in Rotterdam than Esslingen and yet there are more Chinese faces in Esslingen. So where did all the Chinese go? At home? in cars?

Sunday, 30 Apr 2006 - Keukenhof - Amsterdam
The hotel breakfast was great. The variety is not as splendid as many others but enough. Tried their different types of cheese and all was fantastic! Had a really full breakfast and is really to set off to Keukenhof Gardens where there are so many kinds of tulips all in full bloom. It is so postcard perfekt that we took so many photos! unfortunately there wasnt enough time else i could have picnic there the whole day amongst all the colorful tulips!

Afternoon we went to Amsterdam which was a real shopping paradise! It has been so long since i last see shops opened on Sundays. The whole place was bustling with activities. We went to red light district too and it was really an eye-opener. It is really nothing like Geylang because everything is so open here. The girls would advertise themselves behind a full length window and passerbys would then examine the girls as if they are some kind of product like a dress or something in the window display.

After that, it was a long long journey back to Esslingen which took like about 7 hours. I was pretty tired but i thought about Markus driving and keeping awake and i guess that's 100 times worse, driving from 6 pm to 2am. Another interesting thing on Expressways is that there is no upper speed limit unless otherwise stated. So there are many vehicles going at 200Km/h, something really unimaginable in Singapore.

My modules at FHTE

I have been neglecting my bloggy for some time. So here goes.....many days at one shot

24 Apr to 28 Apr: Registration of Exams week

The system here is a little different from the NUS CORS system. Students have to register manually like about 1 and a half months after the semester begins, that is go to the secretariat and somehow someway, they dig out a piece of paper with your name and a whole list of modules supposedly defaulted to the course and semester you are in. So before this exams registration week, you are free to attend all the lectures in the school. Over here, i am in Information Technic Semester.here is an overview of all the modules i m taking.

1.Project Management

This module is non examinable, but we have gotta work on a project which the professor will access and assist the whole process of project planning. It has been interesting to see how they actually use MSProject software to schedule out the whole timeline and individual tasks of each member. It is really so systematic! But but, i really dunno how i m going to be accessed becos i seemed to have little role to play in the whole project. Sobz.Wanted to help more but it seems that everything is already done by them. But later they are meeting to paint some banners so I hope i can have a chance to participate more actively.

A sneak preview of what my group is doing: Carwash for kids! We will be washing cars in a carwash centre and all proceeds will go to a children's hospital. Sounds familiar yah? haha. But we are super nice, providing refreshments and maybe pretzels (not those Auntie Annie kind, btw) to our customers!

2.Marketing (Exam in English!)
It is great that we found out during the exam registration week that the exams are available in English, and the best part is, the professor doesnt mind setting the paper in English even though there may be only 2 students taking that paper so long the Exams Registration office approves. No prize for guessing who are the 2 students. So we finally no need to translate our notes!

The lecture content is actually alright, there is not too much to digest, but just that in german, it takes 10 time harder and slower to digest. But it can be stressful at times, especially when he asked questions and we dun know how to reply in german becos it is all marketing terms. And whenever we look into the german eng dictionary, he would come up to us and ask if there are any problems. Problems? got la.the whole slide! haha.so when we checked the dictionary, we have to do discreetly like a mouse. hee..

3. Datenbanken (Database systems)
The lecture notes is in English! that is a really good plus point. And the programming language in SQL is also in english! Seems quite interesting cos the programming part is really application and this adds to another sem of programming!

4. Optoelectronics (Lecture in English)
Prof Martin is a really good lecturer cos he speaks really slowly and clearly and the best part is, his English is not so German accented. The topic is interesting actually, maybe because the pace is quite comfortable and the lecture notes are really good!

5. Numerische Methoden (Numerical Methods)
This is the lecture which i make a new discovery every week. This week, i realised that the Tutorial sheets are given out at the beginning of the class. As i m always late, i always miss those sheets and assumed that one have to print from the web. This week, the lecture is getting really complicated with all the 3D and polynomial interpolation. And i am lagging behind in tutorials too.Sigh

6.Landeskunde (German History and culture)
German history is actually quite interesting, all the stuff about the 2nd world war, etc. But but, Middle Age history is really boring! Emperor and the King aren' t the same. After almost two months of lessons, we have finally reached the 18th century french revolution. When is it going to be on WWII? The lecturer, Herr Starzmann is really a super flexi jaw person who pronounce almost every word with jaw wide open! And he always uses french to explain the historical terms until Yvonne finally told him that it is really unfair for us, even though there may be many French students in the class. And hence now, he makes effort to explain in English, but at the wrong times! Yesterday, he looked at me and translated the word "Affektion" to english for me. "Affektion" is "Affection" lah! wah lao. So paiseh. I have to acknowledge and nod my head many times just in case he thinks i didnt understand him.

7. Deutsch (German Language)
This class is pretty fun. Last week we just played taboo, in German of course. Then the previous week we had some mini debate thingy which was pretty fun and the 3 and half hours always pass v.fast. This is even more so cos at the beginning of every lesson, a student has to make a mini presentation, about any topic, but we usually speak about our homeland. As this class is specially for exchange students studying in FHTE, so the class consists of the French, Mexicans, Finnish, a Hungarian i think and of cos me me me, the Singaporean. I just presented about singapore a few weeks ago, about the different Races in Singapore. It went pretty well. Others presented pretty well too. Most have songs, videos, and food! Miriam, a french girl actually baked a french cake for us and it was still hot when she gave us after her presentation. It was so yummy! Just one quarter flour, one quarter butter, one quarter sugar, and one quarter water, that is what she said. But taste really nice! I am so sure i ll never be able to reproduce that.

8. New Internet Protocol
This class is in English and by right should not be such a great problem but because I do not have any Computer networks background so it was really tough. One thing interesting about here is that their electives are very specialised. Not like ours, say Computer networks II and everything japalang together. Their electives are like Internet Protocol v6 which is what i m taking, introduction to XML, and they even have a module dedicated to mathlab in the Foundation study. Hence, the students here are v.pro at mathlab and generally anything that is hands on.
Wow, 8 modules is like madness in NUS but here it is actually quite relaxing because most of my modules have only 1 period per week. And every period is 1 and a half hours. I have in total 17 hours per week and 8 of which is taken up by Landeskunde(history) and Deutsch (german language)  But landeskunde and Deutsch always ends early, which is pretty good. And recently, there seems to be alot of holidays on Fri and Mon and hence the week is like pretty short. In addition, sometimes the professors need to go overseas or are sick and hence the lesson is cancelled too. This week's Internet Protokol is also cancelled as the Prof is sick and I have no lessons on friday which means my weekends starts on Thursday! And i am left with only german lesson which is going to be pretty fun cos we are going to Esslingen Zeitung, the local newspaper company.

So yeah, it is pretty slack here. I m not complaining yah. heehee.

Fruhlingsfest again!

Today lessons begin really early and i almost fell asleep during datenbanken if not for yvonne that do her yvonne-wakeing-pple-arm-tapping. haha.it is already a trademark. We were kinda in a rush this morning and didnt have time to make coffee to bring to school. The nearest i got to coffee was the coffee stain in my lecture notes from last week's lec. sigh.

After that i thot i had to rush for optoelectronics but in the end turned out that it was cancelled becos of excurksion week. sigh. But in the end we went for early lunch and we packed our own lunch of rice and vege which was close to our hearts. So chinese at heart. And it is pretty healthy too. Most importantly, can save money!all-in-one solution.

Today our stock (my floor level in my hostel) had a little outing to bad cannsatt fruhlingsfest! And the best part is, today is Dinkelacker day, so the biers are one for one! haha. It was really quite fun and better than last tuesday, besides the cool offer of course, but rather cos we are going with alot of pple we know, and the whole table is like familiar faces. Esp so when our other frens we met through the same exchange program as us also came along after the Landeskunde (german culture and history) class. I was supposed to go today as well but how can i resist the temptation to go out to play with my stock people! and fruhlingsfest ( spring festival ) is also part of german cultur yah. It is the 2nd biggest fest after oktoberfest.

Today is especially special too cos it is the Musikfireworks day too. I did managed to see fireworks but the musik was inaudible cos my ears are still ringing with musik from the live band.

It is really interesting to see how germans really let their hair down. When the work, they work hard, when they play, they play hard too. A german who had visited singapore last semester also as exchange student commented that there is not much festive celebration in singapore which is actually quite true cos there isnt really any large scale mb except like during countdown in sentosa or smthg but then again the atmosphere is different here, esp the stomping on the bench and everyone jus dancing together and making a effort to look into the eyes of the person u are beer mugs cheers-ing with else 7 yrs of bad sex as what i have heard. haha...

It was really fun going out together as a stock outing. The whole level was almost empty. And at the end of the day, have to dilute my tummy with tea! have a fear of having a beer belly, something which i nv hv to worried b4 in singapore! It is anti beer week for mi, which should be pretty easy to achieve than anti-cheese or anti-chocolate week which both didnt last a week. ahha..

Sunday evening bbq

Today muz hv been a lucky day cos

1. dipsy's bdae
2. darling's bdae
3. Mitch n Mike's married for 3 mths!

so many reasons to rejoice but i suddenly feel so far away from the happenings in singapore. On the macro side, i do not have to vote in this year election because i m studying overseas, but somehow it is like i jus turned 21 and supposedly my first time voting, having a teeny weeny influence on singapore's future, somehow i think it will be cool to be able to vote.

On the smaller scale, i miss out little happenings and novelities amongst frens in singapore. Like merina having won free movie tickets for "interesting" movies, nus having free concerts, muggersauruses all over nus during exam time, etc etc

But being here is smthg i wont regret, cos it's really more than what i can ask for. Surely certain things cannot be compared to singapore, like there is no place to go on sunday cos all the shops are closed. But with the right pple, (and nice pple), sundays dun hv to be boring. Today was really sunny for once and pple where studying or relaxing at the rooftop. It was pretty nice minus the wind cos if your worksheets get blowed away that is the end of your homework, probably to be found among some vineyard at the back or flowing along the canal in the front.

Then for dinner tina suggested bbq at the rooftop which was great and Matthias joined us too, helping us to set up the fire and all. The cool part was cos we lived on the highest level, so we just have to shift everything from the kitchen up to the rooftop. We prepared some satay sauce with cucumber and rosti which wasnt part of the bbq but something to fill our growling tummies. Oh yeah, anyone has any idea how to make the potato strips in the rosti stick together?Merina how did u cook last time? Anyway we jus gotta trial and error and that is part of the fun. Then tina made carrot salad and tomato chicken which taste great. Carlos came along later and made his really pro totillas which taste better bbq-ed than heated in pan. And with gouda cheese once again. Then we had bbq-ed apple and pears with honey yvonne's style as dessert which taste really great so nxt time i could do that too. It was really fun and when the sun set it got really cold and we sit around the grill and grilled our palms.

That was really fun eating together and exchanging cultures on food and stuff. We should really do that more often and with more pple perharps when it gets warmer and when the sun sets later in months to come.

234 glücklicher Tag für die Hochzeit?

Today is Dipsy bdae!

Happie bdae to u, happie bdae to u,
u r born in the zoo, happie bdae to u!

is today really a cool day to get married? was walking along the streets just now and there were a few mini celebrations for weddings. The tradition, not just in Germany, they say, goes like this: the day before the wedding, the groom and friends will go out and celebrate in many interesting ways. There was a guy who walked ard the streets collecting signatures on his tshirt which was pretty cool!

Jus seen michie wedding photos and they are really nice. Thx michie for putting all that up and all the captions.i wanna get married too! ahha..like so fun. lol.

When i first came to stuttgart Koenigstrasse i thot it was really like some cold shopping district with pple walking ard. But it gets better in spring and i m lovin it. There was someone playin the piano in the middle of the street and the groups of pple jus sit down ard the piano and jus relax and enjoy. reminds mi of the open air concerts outside esplanade but there isnt always enuff space for everyone and it only takes place like on special occasions like perharps christmas or new yr.

Jus another week more, i ld hv been here for 2 months. 2 months more of lectures, then half a month of exams and it is the end of the semester. Sheesh.Jus as when i m beginning to like the lifestyle here. Why muz time fly so fast? Esslingen is really a nice place to live in.

i think i ll return.

A funny evening

My referat on wednesday went well.Except my silly joke on "which food in Singapur ist the heaviest?" then i think i didnt translate heaviest properly then my joke is wasted! When i asked the class have you understand why? then nobody understood.sad sad.My "one-tonne" noodle!haha..i miss wanton mee.Merina! i miss the wanton mee in ubi. The uncle that always give a lot of wanton and chicken feet.haha.and the v.meaty smelly roast pork! Oh and the super spicy tom yam soup.Miss those days when we were working in ubi.

Ytd evening mi, yvonne and tina made choco vanilla pudding and banana soup. When tina suggested banana soup i was like banana??So cool!It turned out it is her first time too making the soup and it was all an experiment for us all. But wat i really like best was the fried banana sprinkled wif roasted coconut powder.heehaa.I think she is really adventurous at tryin out new recipes and always so successful! hee..nxt time i shld do that and become a great cook.wahahhaa

And it was alex's bdae too and we hv a little decorated pudding cake which was actually quite huge. haha.ate too much chocolate and this week shall be chocolate-free week. Last week was cheese-free week which lasted till the new packet of brie cheese was opened and the battle was lost. It was once again so yummlicious.haha.and my fav gouda or edamer cheese with nutella!ok, every paragraph has smthg abt food and this is really not a gd sign. Are singaporeans all abt food? Have to check out Yvonne's blog and see what she says.Food Food FOod?haha

Oh yeah back to alex's bdae. We had dinner tog in our cosy little kitchen which i m beginning to like more and more everyday. And then sang happie bdae in many many languages. haha..so fun.Jose brought his lappie too and we listened to mexican songs which were so full of emotions.I dunno how to describe yah.Mb like the french, romantic and slow and nice.

oh then we played wif whipped cream but it wasnt that bad actually. alex's face is still 90% face and 10% cream. No skill. haha..mb nxt time.the cream is still in the fridge.wahahha.oops secret is out.Haha.

Tina and yvonne went up to the rooftop admist all the mess in the kitchen and made "ALLES GUTE" out of tealights and it was pretty difficult cos the wind was quite strong. Then we all went up and played with wax which wasnt hot at all cos the weather was cool. haha. Then more singing and wax playing and tryin to make a singapore shape out of inverted germany map shape. ahha...

Cleaning up the wax was fun wif so many hands and we shovel till the floor prob came off too. but still not really clean cos we couldnt see clearly in the dark. Now it is sunny and hopefully the natural elements can help a bit??

then aft that we had an invitation to the opera and guess what?? no clothes! haha.lol.that was really funny and the pple was so enthu on helping us choose clothes and in the end i m tina from head to toe! It was really funny cos we tried on endless combination of clothes and shoes and Shi nan had a full length mirror which was really great! We even went to the 3 floor to borrow boots from the french gals and suddenly i feel like everyone is like so nice. It is like smthg i hv nv experience cos i dun hv an elder sister and like cannot share clothes or like give comments on dressing or smthg. And tina was really nice cos she really took effort to see how we look overall and we look great! Then in the end we helped her choose her clothes too and it was great fun tryin matching all the accessories and clothes. haha..when was the last time i did smthg like that? At mich's place where all the bridesmaids were like helping each other match stuff. That was so much fun too.Michie i wan to see the photos! hahaha.

HAHAHHAHAA..it has been a long time since i had so much fun with such simple things in life.

Sleepy aftnn

Oh dear i m so sleepy. Rehearsing for my presentation later and it is so boring repeating the same thing again and again. Cant wait for it to be over cos i dun wanna spend too much time on a subject which i m not claiming credit for in nus! v.praktisch.haha.But then again must let people know more about singapore mah.that is really really important. We are not jus a dot in the middle of nowhere. Haha..i m becoming so patriotic.i should celebrate National Day when i cum back!

Slept like a pig till 10 plus today and got a shock when i woke up! that is more than 10 hrs of zz and under the strong sunlight too. Ytd night was pretty tiring but fun. Went to the Springfest in Bad Canstatt,in stuttgart. it it like a whole amusement park, jus that everything is temporary and the best part is it doesnt look temporary. Will put up some pix aft i kop them from yvonne.

There were roller coasters, free fallers, and other spinning machines that really look colorful and attractive. but quite expensive so didnt play any. Rather spend on food which i did and did not regret. There were many Bier Tents or dunno wat u call them, but they are really huge and the interior just look like a club with live band bars, etc. Then there were rows of tables and benches like the primary skool canteens jus that people were dancing on the benches. At some point in time where there were so many people standing on benches till i felt the floor has risen! Only the waitress are like submerged below. ahha..and they are really cute in traditional dresses and v.pro too, carrying dunno how many mugs of 1 liter biers with their hands. And they are really heavy!

Oh yeah, i finally tasted Schweinhaxe which is Pork knuckles which is really really Yummlicious! For the 1st time in dunno how long i actually like pork fat! haha.normally i would remove the fat layer in Chinese dishes. And the skin was really crispy! Ok every sentence is like ending wif !!! becos that is really jus how it tastes. !!! haha. It taste nice with bier too. Oh yeah my fav is Radler which is like lemonade with bier and it has the fizziness like cocktail which i like. And they have alcohol free bier too which taste jus as good as normal! ahha..i cant tell the difference. But it was really an experience, and the germans are really wild at partying and alot of stamina too! Haha..but the not so nice part is that eveyone smokes. So my whole body smell really terrible after the whole thing and my tummy felt weird after the Pork knuckes did dunno how many roller coaster from jumping on the benches. Haha..but v.fun.

ok that is all for now and i ll prob rehearse my presentation one last time before i go to skool later.

End of lazy easter weekend

here goes the end of easter weekend and everything is back to normal again. The corridor is once again smoky. sigh.the neighbour that i dun really like is back again.Think he greeted mi when i went into the kitchen to make coffee, but i bo hiew him. haha...better not be friendly for my own good.

tried to study but CCN is really v.wordy! It is full of 3 letter abbreviations that i am sure if i jus hit any 3 letters blindy on the keyboard it is sure to be some abbreviation in CCN.sigh.Oh dear, havent started my Numerik Methods and tmr is the lecture! Oh the funny thing is, it took me like after almost 1 month of lessons to figure out the lecture starts at 1115 am instead of 1130. Cos the 1st lesson i was super enthusiatic so i went at 1115 and wait and wait till 1135. so i really thot it was 1130! this is the ambiguity of the timetable here. The 3rd period is 1130 to 1300 in theory in the timetable but at the lecturer's discretion he may choose to start it early. Probably to end early so that the students can avoid the queue at the Canteen that stretches all the way outside where people have to stand in the cold.Brr...Then the period after lunch is in theory 1400 to 1530. But in practice at the lecturer's discretion he may choose to begin at 130! Then for us new students who dunno the lecturer's habit keep having to play guessing game. So tmr i wont be late for Numerik!

Oh spoke to mom for almost an hr like in the middle of the night in singapore but i dun care.Haha.That made me high an in a good mood!yay!lalala.

Oh yeah, this week i m the Kuechedienst. On duty for kitchen services. i ll have to empty the rubbish bins. The rubbish here is pretty interesting. It is divided into Paper waste which goes into one basket above the fridge, then those with the recycled logo which goes into a yellow bag, then the food waste which is er xin cos the dustbin is not lined with a plastic bag like in singapore, and finally the remainder, which prob include plastic wrapping w/o the recycled logo goes into another bin. Well, the food waste bin is kinda like getting full, haha..but it is still tolerable, not exploding. So i shall prob empty it tmr.It is pretty troublesome cos i hv to bring the bin down to 1st floor outside the building to throw away. and i kinda like forgot which bin outside is for wat.But i m sure my nose can tell which one is the foodwaste bin.haha.

In addition to emptying the bins, i gotta do groceries if like anyone puts up a request. Usually common food like oil, washing liquid, salt, etc is shared among everyone in the floor. then when it runs out, someone will put an indication on the piece of paper put up in the kitchen cabinet. Ytd night i had a eerie dream that the list was so full that i got a shock!i thought it was some kind of retribution or what. My first day of Kuechedienst then such a thing happened. Thankfully it was just a dream. Then i keep having weird and funny dreams these few days whereas for the past one month i cant even remember a single dream almost every night.

Easter Weekend

April 15 was a zoo day! i feel like i m a kid again cos i m gg to the zoo zoo zoo, how abt u u u, u can come along too too too, cos we are going to the zoo zoo zoo!

Went to the Wilhelma zoo and spent the whole day there! We walked around the place like from 11 till 6 plus, only stopping for lunch when our butts can finally rest. And my legs too apparently still sore from last thursday's Taebo. But i ll be fitter, so no prob.

It is really much bigger than singapore zoo and loads of beautiful gardens to walk around in. there were alot of greenhouse mini jungles and i felt so at home again amongst tropical forest habitat cos it is humid once again!  Seen so many animals and fish that i really lost count. Oh there is orang-utan too which reminds me so much of Singapore zoo.

Oh yeah, made a discovery that cheese taste yummy with nutella. So sinful but yummy.oh i m on a no-cheese diet till tuesday morning cos i ate dunno how many slices of cheese at one meal at one go.So hopefully it is successful! cos the cheese has like 48% fat! Oh my god.haha.no more cheese for now.

Oh yeah, bought some chicken necks too in the evening at the supermarket.my fav again! And it is cheap too cos nobody likes them except me and doggies perharps.

so basically saturday was a really happie day for mi! high on cheese and chicken neck.

April 16 is "maria-day". Woke up in the morning to hand wash my clothes cos the sunlight was bright and warm. yeah! then vacuumed my room which is full of dunno wat white bits of stuff and naturally loads of hair. then now i can finally begin to start work.aft i finish this blog of course.

which is now!

I have a space!

hello everyone!

this is like my dunno how many attempt at bloggin. the previous attempts was pretty unsuccessful cos i hate to write. but then again this is such a great way of telling everyone how i m doing instead of repeating 100 times to frens and family whenever they ask how is life here? so nxt time u can ask smthg else more than "how is life here?" then i ll hv more things to share wif u! if i hv anything interesting actually.
so here goes....*drum rolls*..my first blog of 2006!

My good friday was pretty good. The whole level was pretty quiet and finally smoke free.yay! healthy lungs. Went to stuttgart today to meet Yvon's Singaporean friend which happens to be in EE too. Mb i hv seen him b4 in skool cos we attend the same lecture. or mb i m creating the illusion that i hv seen him b4 when i might not hv actually. Complicated brain things going on in my head. Nevermind. But the day went well strolling around stuttgart and went up to the Mercedes Benz Turm again, but fortunately we took the lift this time round.

And in the aftnn i actually sat down n willed myself to begin dimystifying commnications networks. And again for the 1st time i sat down to study! After coffee of course. And microwaved coffee too. Heard that coffee after being microwaved may explode. Is that really true? hopefully i m not so unluckily yah.

Dinner was great too! Mi and yvon ate together in D stock kitchen again with jose and alex and the c------o was great! sorry i forgot the name of the food, again. but it was with gouda and anything wif cheese is heaven! Thx jose for making the taco like thingy from flour and alex for providin eye power. (Singlish: help, but with the eye only). hee,mi too didnt help actually and nibbled on cheese in the background.

Oh yeah, nus people are like finishing their study break this week yah? which means exams will begin next wk! oh, this is really so fast! All the best for the exams to muggersauruses out there, esp my fav!

lalala. :o)
