liking it more and more everyday

Today was a rocky start after waking up at 720! Macham 15 mins before lecture!  wat happened to mi. i m immuned to my alarm clock. Was late for lecture naturally, and was terribly lost in lab. Once more, i have came unprepared for lab.

And i had a presentation for my german culture lesson, and of all topic, i have chosen the German kitchen. Why everything i do is about food. Haha. I m such a food fan. But it was really fun, interviewing people and stuff. The cool part is after the end of our presentation we had a slide dedicated to Emeline, cos tmr is her bdae! then we had a little bdae celebration at Dick. I have been here for 3 months and this is the 1st time i have been to dick, supposedly the most happening place in the whole of Esslingen. But it is pretty much just a shopping mall and pub place. but we have got a nice corner at d-bar.

"What is the name of the bar we are going?"

"d-bar"

"Yah, i know, which bar?

"d-bar!"

Haha..it sounds a little duh, like That CD shop and This fashion.

But it is really nice chatting with frens and all but when people talk about when are we going back or about after exams it gets a little sad. It is like all happening too soon, just when i m beginning to understand the lectures a bit more. (or maybe getting used to not understanding) Next week is Spring holidays, and there is about prob 1 or 2 more weeks of lessons and that marks the end of formal lessons!

Why does time always flies when i m enjoying. Sure i look forward to going back and doing stuff with frens and family back home, but i ll never know when am i going to come back here again. And i have singapore for all my whole life.

Well sad or not, time still flies mercilessly. So, looking on the brighter side, i have got the Muenster trip to look forward to. Yay! for a change, i m not just visiting a place and admiring the architecture and the appearance but also getting to know a German family.

So i will be away for the whole of next week from this Thursday onwards!

Long and Peaceful weekend

Did i promise darling that i gotta start studying? sheesh...how cum i m sinking back to relaxed mode. I cant seem to find the mood to study when the weather is gloomy and rainy. I know it is just excuses, but...(here goes another excuse)

On wednesday i carwashed at the clean park! haha. Whenever i tell people then i carwashed, they think that it is my part time job! haha. i wish! It is part of my project managment module and we did carwashing in a cleanpark. And the proceeds from the wash go to the Children's hospital. Think we got around 200+ that day. i m so proud of myself cos i can wash the car really clean. Partly becos the water hose is really strong and the wash program is really good. Firstly, we spray the car slowly with water to remove surface dirt. After that, we use the giant brush with foam oozing out from it to brush off all the muddy stuff. Thirdly, we wash away all that foamy mess. Following that, we spray the only metallic parts with hot water. After that, we spray coat the whole car with some magic waterproof coating that will cause all the surface water to fly away when the car later travel at 80 or 100km/h. See, pretty cool rite. Haha. But after washing my first car, my hand was shivering that i cant eat my sandwich properly! haha, but then after that quite slack cos many of the people would prefer to wash their cars themselves cos they know where is dirty and stuff. Haha. There was a Porsche which came in and everyone was like, ok, he's mine! haha..the car btw, not the guy inside. Our professor, Prof Ullrich was one of our 1st customer and he made a huge donation too! That's really nice. Hope he makes another good donation to my project management grade! ;)

This aftnn had lunch by Jose's kitchen. His Mexicanische Pasta taste really great. Mi and Yvon agreed that it tastes better than Pastamania cos normally somewhere halfway thro the cheesy creamy mixture i ll get sick of the tomato-ey feeling. But his is really yummilicious that i took a 2nd helping! haha. And i m getting fat soon. Jus ytd, i woke up and looked into the mirror, and OMG, my face is swollen! Ah....wat happened? Shit, i must control my diet. Please no more cheese!

And the story of mi and my pet insects never ends. 23 insects so far from what i can see from my table. Jus leaving my green tea on my table for 10 mins resulted in 2 kamikaze flies. To the flies: I cant drink my tea, u lose your life. What is ur point? And yesterday when the wind blew, my whole body and the blanket is showered by a swarm of dead flies! Someone pls offer help on how to get rid of insects. I did google searched on how to get rid of insects but the pictures of the insects almost made mi puke and i decided i will jus die looking at pics of insects before i even learn how to kill them. How?

And i m going to Muenster soon during the Spring holidays next week to stay with yvonne's host family and we are going by caravan to holland too! I m so so lucky.:o) thx, Yvonne! yay! After which i return it will be the middle of June and almost exams time. It is getting scary. Oh shheeeet..haha...

Terrific Tuesday!

Today i had many lessons but was quite a happie and relaxing day. Finally after more than 1 mth of boycotting canteen food, i decided to have my lunch there and be a normal FH student. I really have luck cos firstly, the soup today actually taste quite nice cos it wasnt salty. And the menu seems interesting with "Kalbsmaultaschen überbacken"  and from what i tried to translate was "Overbaked" Maultaschen(the pasta dumplings i was talking about in my previous post). I thought i will get smthg browny but later Tina explained that "overbaked" just means it was baked with smthg over it. In this case Cheese and Tomato. The 1st bite was nice cos it taste like Chinese food cos it is a bit "kiam" and soy-saucey feeling. But after a while it gets a bit overwhelming. If i had lunchbox i sure dabao back home to eat later. But then i tell myself cannot waste food so in the end i did finished it of course. To digest my overwhelming stomach i decided to take a walk in the city centre and i need to do some shopping as well. But i went shopping without a shopping bag and had to put all my barang barang in my jeans pocket!

Landeskunde(History and Culture) lesson was pretty interesting and enjoyable today cos for once, it is not abt Middle Ages and the Emperor but about WWI and events preceeding WWII. For once, it wasnt so difficult to understand Herr Starzmann. His lessons arent that hard after all, but maybe because he only speaks and speaks without any visual aids like handouts or ppt slides so it is smthg which i m not really used to and hence cannot really absorb.  And maybe because we didnt have much lesson time today cos we have 3 groups of presentations from our french classmates. And they had really interesting topics which are related to our lives here in Germany, like Education system, politics, the automobile industry, etc. Oh yes, i have to visit the New Benz Museum after seeing all the pictures of those Vintage cars! ahhh...

After lesson, we came back quite late and to our surprise, Tina had prepared Pfannkuchen (Swabian pancakes) for us! It is really thin and crispy and smells really nice! Feel so touched and happy! She had set the table with all the jams and spreads for us too. Furthermore, she waited for us though we actually came back quite late ard 8 plus. So i happily decorated my Pfannkuchen till it is almost the German Flag color but in the wrong order of colours. haha..

Tmr will be a fun day too cos i will out carwashing! It is my project management module and we are doing fundraising for a Childrens hospital. Sounds like a YEP project too yah. But the carwash was really an eyeopener cos we are doing it in a specially for carwashing centre and it seems kinda pro. So do look out for my nxt post about the carwash project!

Maultaschen Party!

Maultaschen, which is pasta square pockets filled with meat and spinach, like Ravioli, is a Swabian speciality, southwest Germany.

Today, we cooked Maultaschen, or rather Tina cooked and we are mostly assisstants or provided eye power. We made 3 kinds of Maultaschen: The 1st one as appetizer in soup, where the little pockets swim around the pot. The 2nd was fried with egg and onion and smells really lovely. Somewhat smells like Fuyong egg in the claypot stall in Science canteen. And the last with cheese and tomato puree and baked in oven which is my fav, cos it has loads of cheese: parmesan, edamer and it is like Lasagne!

It is swabish tradition to finish up all the food on the table and we wiped clean all the 3 dishes and digged around the whole kitchen cabinet to find board games to play. We found a numerical lock and breaking the code is a game too! Then we koped scrabble from the kitchen one floor below and it was really difficult to play in german cos my instinct is to group the letters to form English words. Then somewhat from scrabble we ended in shoewar, where all the girls' slippers were slipped off and hidden away! Then we all ganged up and removed Jose and Alex's shoes too and hid in all kinds of places, in the Freezer(with food inside), in the girls' toilet, in the lift.

It seems silly but we really had much fun with such simple pleasures. It feels great to play like nobody's business, like during primary school when i used to play catching all over the school, from the canteen, to the dentist's, then to the principal's office, for making too much noise. Haha.

Fun times like these, are times where i m going to miss most. Exactly one month more to exams, 2 months more before flying back. Sure i miss home and cant wait to get back to my family, but the uncertainty of when i m ever going to return back to germany and all the friendships forged here really made mi feel really unwilling to leave.

But that is like in 2 months. I shall treasure the remaining time i have here.

Italy trip

Last weekend was spent in Italy! The v.touisty place but by the Singaporean Mentality, u can nv go wrong with the longest queue of all char kway teow stalls.

12 May 2006

We set off to Bologna, the ulu place where nobody knows. But everyone knows Spaghetti Bolognese yah? Unfortunately i couldnt find that there either. Being kiasu we sat at the front of the waiting lounge jus before the gate and were one of the 1st few people to board the plane. The reward: Nice legroom just in front of the emergency exit. Teeny setback: Every single bottle and bag, including the small bag of sandwich i hid behind my back was discovered and had to be put in the cabin or someplace where it wont fly off easily.

Bologna airport is way different from a budget airport. It has international connections, many restaurants and it is just like stuttgart airport. We caught a train to Florence and had a pleasant surprise that our trains are jus as nice as the ICE trains. I dunno what class is that but it was fast and stable.

My favourite attraction is the Piazza del Duomo. The cathedral is so magnificent and huge that i wondered how people in the past built it. The construction lasted for more than 150 years and is one of the largest churches in the world! It was really a pity that we couldnt get to see the interior even though we tried to rush back the next day.

13 May 2006

Today i still cant believe that i m going to visit the ever so popular leaning tower of pisa which Italien scientists dropped balls of equal mass from?? I didnt get to find out if Galileo really conducted experiments there but the tower was really leaning and it felt weird climbing up a leaning tower. But the popularity of the tower really overshadowed all the other buildings surrounding it that i really thought that the tower was jus a tower in the middle of nowhere. But in actual fact, the bell tower is part of a group of buildings that symbolises the life of important Italiens in the past. From young the Christian is being baptised in the Batistry, then as he grows up, he prays in the cathedral. After his death, he is buried in the cemetary just beside the Baptistry. And the bell tower is to call the people for a mass.

But today, the place is a successful tourist attraction where English can be heard more often than Italien and there are lines of souvenoir shops along the streets. Something pretty interesting is that everyone is like taking photos of themselves superimposingly pushing the tower or some funny actions. If Pisa the tower is human, he probably will be laughing his toes off at all the silly things people do with his slanted body.

14 May 2006

Morning was spent strolling along the streets of Bologna where some marathon happened to be held there. There was pretty nothing much to do so we went to the airport early to have a really italien meal of Riscotti and Tortellini. The place was really fourt court style(v.rare to find) and we got a nice seat which a view of all the planes along the runway. The price was cheap too. What more can we ask for? Well, a rest for our tired feet!

Excursions week

This week is not officially excursion week but i have 2 excursions so far, on monday and tuesday.

Monday, 8 May 2006
In the morning, we went Bosch and had a little tour ard the factory. The introduction was pretty good, seeing all the first car engine and the evolution process. But after that we had a little tour around the factory, in which we really cannot see the connection between the process and the product.  for example how a particular screw or a particular test is connected to the whole picture of the car engine. It is pretty wasted i would say. But nevertheless we gotta visit Bosch and understand the different areas of products Bosch covers.

Today was the day of the most lessons and i happened to have a full day excursion to frankfurt. We set off in the morning at 7am in a really comfortable coach. And after breakfast of brown sunflower seed bread, which was a lil sour but nice to chew on, i fell asleep and woke up to frankfurt!

It was nice seeing skyscrapers again. It doesnt exactly feel like singapore but the feeling was great amongst all the tall and majestic buildings. We went to the  FWB® Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse (Frankfurt Stock Exchange), which was quite an insight learning about the bidding and asking process and how everything is so real time. I expected the whole marketplace to be well, like a market, but all was in order, jus people sitting down and looking at many many screens with 2 eyes.

Another place i enjoyed was the Communications Museum cos we get the see how the different medias evolved over the centuries. There were also hand ons games for Optical Telegraphy which was used in the past and actually transmits faster than snail mail over thousands of kilometers and the code is repeated from one telegraph station to the next.

Frankfurt in general is bustling with activities and varieties. We had lunch at some small stalls selling chinese take away food which was actually not bad. I had some fried pork slices with rice and took loads of chilli(and they were spicy!) which was really shiok. There were also more Asians and i actually heard a singlish sentence! "walk here la" or smthg to this meaning, which made yvonne and mi turn our heads immediately and there was this chinese family.

Wednesday, 10 May 2006
Today there isnt any excursion but i woke up late cos the sun didnt shine in strongly to wake mi up! Then i thought of maybe cooking some porridge cos yvonne was feeling good the night before and guess wat! it was burnt. Upset leh. esp so cos i brought all the stuff to kitchen to study to watch the fire and it was burnt???Yah now it still remains a mystery y did it burnt. Then mi n yvonne had to go grocery shopping then with her help, the next porridge was successful. Haha..how? how can i learn to cook better? Help.

Anyway, was feeling pretty bored choosing my fyp in the aftnn cos there were so many choices. Choosing 8 out of 470 fyps is like making me v.sleepy. haha...but spoke to merina over skype and it felt so nice! ever since i came here, it seemed like i totally lost touch with what is happening around my friends and msn is jus like superficial, you speak but not actually listen with all the distractions around.

Oh another great thing to rejoice is my first mail from singapore! and the honour goes to mitch! so nice and i m really touched! thx mich for the choco lip balm and i love chocolates! yay

Fruehlingsfest and new experience each time!

Today was a great day and mood was super super happie despite being tired at the end of the day.

I woke up late and had ample sleep. When i stepped into the kitchen, i could smell herbal chicken soup! ah ha...muz be yvonne! she has woke up early to cook the wat she calls  "Vit C" soup which is v.yummlicious. it is smhthg i get to enjoy once a mth! Thx yvon for the long long preparation in the kitchen the whole morning cos i didnt help much. And Chun Wei came to join us for lunch and we went to Fruehlingsfest tog after that.

Fruehlingsfest in the daytime was really different. Going there with different pple is a different experience. The last few time we went there most of the time was spent in a bier tent and this time was a more peaceful and fresh change.

I felt like a kid again playing little games in pasar malam stalls. And there is nv a game one is too old for. We sat on the ferris wheel and it had a hidden surprise cos our cabin can spin! So exciting...and poor yvonne was scared to bits but still brave enough to take many photos! The scenery was great seeing Bad Cannstatt being surrounded by hills and greenery. We sat on water slides too and was wet but fun, esp with yvonne around! hee...there were many other rides too, but just looking at them makes mi uncomfortable.

Another thing i like abt the fest is that we can eat food that we normally cant find in the streets, like a whole fish! it has been such a long time we ate fish with bones. The side bones were so chewy that i chewed them off. And Chun Wei cleared the whole head too. Apparently he is also another chewy person who chews the bone cartilage and marrow! But till now i have yet to find my fellow speices who eat chicken neck whole.

Today is Esslingen Music Night too where many bars in Esslingen have live music and there is shuttle bus to shuttle people from bar to bar the whole night. But we were pretty tired and didnt really have the stamina to last the whole night so we decided to call it a day.

But tmr is going to be a cool day cos we are going shopping in Metzingen. It is like the 1st time shops are actually opened on sundays. Wat a miracle and how can we miss it! It's great that finally we have smthg to do on sundays instead of staying at home the whole day.

Weekend in Holland!

Last weekend i was in holland and i really enjoyed every bit of it.

Friday, 28 Apr 2006
It didnt started off went cos on Friday night i was locked in my room. No matter how hard i turn the key in the lock it jus wouldnt bulge. Initially i thought it was someone was playing a silly prank but after awhile it seemed unlikely. So i seeked Yvonne's help thro msn.Luckily she wasnt asleep else i think i would hv cried. Then i had to throw the key out through my window to the 1st storey so that others can try opening from outside. Silly thoughts ran through my head like why must this happen just the night before i wanna go holland? It is like about 6 hours before departure. what if i m trapped the whole night? Then i cant go? muz i wait till tuesday before a locksmith is available? wat if i wanna pee? or shit? forunately, Matthias managed to turned the key after what seems like really long to mi cos i was so kan cheong. And he was saying the key was on the verge of breaking. Sheesh, i cant imagine if that happens. All is over and i went to lalaland.

Saturday, 29 Apr 2006 - Kinderdijk - Rotterdam
We left for holland slightly before 6 but it was already quite bright. It was the beginning of a 6 hr journey to Holland with an old but tough audi. Yvonne's classmate, Zhao Wei has invited us for this short trip with another of her friend, Jianping and her partner, Markus, a german. Along the journey we listened to chinese songs and i felt pretty much at home.

We reached holland around 11 plus and it is really interesting because there is really no physical borders or customs. It is jus as we travel along the expressway and suddenly, oh we are in holland. Our first stop was Kinderdijk, a windmill village with 19 mills dating all the way back from 1740s. One of them is opened to visitors and we could see how the people in those days lived and how the rotating shafts of the mills pump the water to reservoirs to control flooding because the whole place is below sealevel.

After that we travelled to Rottedam and checked into NH hotel. I was pretty excited cos we are like staying in a hotel! It has been so long since i last stayed in a Hotel. I am like wow-ing and taking in the surroundings like a mountain turtle. Haha.Though the experience was good, i would have preferred to stay in Youth Hostels cos they are much cheaper and somehow more casual and more fun.

Maybe because there were some celebration (it was the Queen's Birthday), the streets was especially messy and full of litter. There is Chinatown in the city centre, but not much Chinese around. That is really ironic. There are more Chinese Restaurants and shops in Rotterdam than Esslingen and yet there are more Chinese faces in Esslingen. So where did all the Chinese go? At home? in cars?

Sunday, 30 Apr 2006 - Keukenhof - Amsterdam
The hotel breakfast was great. The variety is not as splendid as many others but enough. Tried their different types of cheese and all was fantastic! Had a really full breakfast and is really to set off to Keukenhof Gardens where there are so many kinds of tulips all in full bloom. It is so postcard perfekt that we took so many photos! unfortunately there wasnt enough time else i could have picnic there the whole day amongst all the colorful tulips!

Afternoon we went to Amsterdam which was a real shopping paradise! It has been so long since i last see shops opened on Sundays. The whole place was bustling with activities. We went to red light district too and it was really an eye-opener. It is really nothing like Geylang because everything is so open here. The girls would advertise themselves behind a full length window and passerbys would then examine the girls as if they are some kind of product like a dress or something in the window display.

After that, it was a long long journey back to Esslingen which took like about 7 hours. I was pretty tired but i thought about Markus driving and keeping awake and i guess that's 100 times worse, driving from 6 pm to 2am. Another interesting thing on Expressways is that there is no upper speed limit unless otherwise stated. So there are many vehicles going at 200Km/h, something really unimaginable in Singapore.

My modules at FHTE

I have been neglecting my bloggy for some time. So here goes.....many days at one shot

24 Apr to 28 Apr: Registration of Exams week

The system here is a little different from the NUS CORS system. Students have to register manually like about 1 and a half months after the semester begins, that is go to the secretariat and somehow someway, they dig out a piece of paper with your name and a whole list of modules supposedly defaulted to the course and semester you are in. So before this exams registration week, you are free to attend all the lectures in the school. Over here, i am in Information Technic Semester.here is an overview of all the modules i m taking.

1.Project Management

This module is non examinable, but we have gotta work on a project which the professor will access and assist the whole process of project planning. It has been interesting to see how they actually use MSProject software to schedule out the whole timeline and individual tasks of each member. It is really so systematic! But but, i really dunno how i m going to be accessed becos i seemed to have little role to play in the whole project. Sobz.Wanted to help more but it seems that everything is already done by them. But later they are meeting to paint some banners so I hope i can have a chance to participate more actively.

A sneak preview of what my group is doing: Carwash for kids! We will be washing cars in a carwash centre and all proceeds will go to a children's hospital. Sounds familiar yah? haha. But we are super nice, providing refreshments and maybe pretzels (not those Auntie Annie kind, btw) to our customers!

2.Marketing (Exam in English!)
It is great that we found out during the exam registration week that the exams are available in English, and the best part is, the professor doesnt mind setting the paper in English even though there may be only 2 students taking that paper so long the Exams Registration office approves. No prize for guessing who are the 2 students. So we finally no need to translate our notes!

The lecture content is actually alright, there is not too much to digest, but just that in german, it takes 10 time harder and slower to digest. But it can be stressful at times, especially when he asked questions and we dun know how to reply in german becos it is all marketing terms. And whenever we look into the german eng dictionary, he would come up to us and ask if there are any problems. Problems? got la.the whole slide! haha.so when we checked the dictionary, we have to do discreetly like a mouse. hee..

3. Datenbanken (Database systems)
The lecture notes is in English! that is a really good plus point. And the programming language in SQL is also in english! Seems quite interesting cos the programming part is really application and this adds to another sem of programming!

4. Optoelectronics (Lecture in English)
Prof Martin is a really good lecturer cos he speaks really slowly and clearly and the best part is, his English is not so German accented. The topic is interesting actually, maybe because the pace is quite comfortable and the lecture notes are really good!

5. Numerische Methoden (Numerical Methods)
This is the lecture which i make a new discovery every week. This week, i realised that the Tutorial sheets are given out at the beginning of the class. As i m always late, i always miss those sheets and assumed that one have to print from the web. This week, the lecture is getting really complicated with all the 3D and polynomial interpolation. And i am lagging behind in tutorials too.Sigh

6.Landeskunde (German History and culture)
German history is actually quite interesting, all the stuff about the 2nd world war, etc. But but, Middle Age history is really boring! Emperor and the King aren' t the same. After almost two months of lessons, we have finally reached the 18th century french revolution. When is it going to be on WWII? The lecturer, Herr Starzmann is really a super flexi jaw person who pronounce almost every word with jaw wide open! And he always uses french to explain the historical terms until Yvonne finally told him that it is really unfair for us, even though there may be many French students in the class. And hence now, he makes effort to explain in English, but at the wrong times! Yesterday, he looked at me and translated the word "Affektion" to english for me. "Affektion" is "Affection" lah! wah lao. So paiseh. I have to acknowledge and nod my head many times just in case he thinks i didnt understand him.

7. Deutsch (German Language)
This class is pretty fun. Last week we just played taboo, in German of course. Then the previous week we had some mini debate thingy which was pretty fun and the 3 and half hours always pass v.fast. This is even more so cos at the beginning of every lesson, a student has to make a mini presentation, about any topic, but we usually speak about our homeland. As this class is specially for exchange students studying in FHTE, so the class consists of the French, Mexicans, Finnish, a Hungarian i think and of cos me me me, the Singaporean. I just presented about singapore a few weeks ago, about the different Races in Singapore. It went pretty well. Others presented pretty well too. Most have songs, videos, and food! Miriam, a french girl actually baked a french cake for us and it was still hot when she gave us after her presentation. It was so yummy! Just one quarter flour, one quarter butter, one quarter sugar, and one quarter water, that is what she said. But taste really nice! I am so sure i ll never be able to reproduce that.

8. New Internet Protocol
This class is in English and by right should not be such a great problem but because I do not have any Computer networks background so it was really tough. One thing interesting about here is that their electives are very specialised. Not like ours, say Computer networks II and everything japalang together. Their electives are like Internet Protocol v6 which is what i m taking, introduction to XML, and they even have a module dedicated to mathlab in the Foundation study. Hence, the students here are v.pro at mathlab and generally anything that is hands on.
Wow, 8 modules is like madness in NUS but here it is actually quite relaxing because most of my modules have only 1 period per week. And every period is 1 and a half hours. I have in total 17 hours per week and 8 of which is taken up by Landeskunde(history) and Deutsch (german language)  But landeskunde and Deutsch always ends early, which is pretty good. And recently, there seems to be alot of holidays on Fri and Mon and hence the week is like pretty short. In addition, sometimes the professors need to go overseas or are sick and hence the lesson is cancelled too. This week's Internet Protokol is also cancelled as the Prof is sick and I have no lessons on friday which means my weekends starts on Thursday! And i am left with only german lesson which is going to be pretty fun cos we are going to Esslingen Zeitung, the local newspaper company.

So yeah, it is pretty slack here. I m not complaining yah. heehee.
